What is FPU?

FPU is a 13-week life-changing program that empowers and teaches you how to make the right money decisions to achieve your financial goals and give you financial peace.  The course includes practical lessons on eliminating debt, building wealth, giving like never before, and much, much more!

It's for everyone from the financially secure to the financially distressed. Over 650,000 families and individuals have attended Financial Peace University.  On average, FPU graduates have paid off over $5,300 in debt and saved $2,700 during the 91-day program.

Leslie Phillips:

Math and I got off to a rocky start in elementary school.  My high school transcripts are evidence that I just barely passed the minimal requirements. During my 3 yrs of college stint I didn’t sign up for even one math class because I didn’t want to bring my GPA down. I always jokingly said, “Numbers and I don’t get along”, but unfortunately, it became a true handicap as an adult. As a result, when it came to creating a budget or balancing my checkbook I would avoid it at all costs. And cost me it did! I lived pay-check to pay-check all my life. My insecurities about money matters kept me stuck.

When Bob and I first got married, he tried very hard to teach me how to save and budget, but I was stubborn and persisted in my old ways, using credit cards and carrying balances each month. It quickly became a sore spot in our relationship. Bob was very patient with my shortcomings and all the while was saving money in spite of me! Thank goodness he did, because when the roof needed to be replaced, when the water heater, the dryer, the cars, and the washer broke, Bob was able to pay cash for each of them. I was unfairly letting the burden of our financial situation fall squarely on Bob’s shoulders. Finally, to make a long story short, the straw that broke the camel’s back was the student loans I was slowly repaying.

We had both become so discouraged and disheartened. It seemed impossible to get ahead. Then I listened to a couple tell their story about how God had transformed their lives during a financial crisis using the knowledge they’d gain through the FPU Course . I was intrigued. I presented the idea to Bob as a ‘last ditch effort’. He agreed, convinced that it was worth the $99 (fee) if it could get me on board!

Even though it had been my idea, I dreaded going to the first class. I was pleasantly surprised, the class was actually fun! The videos were really funny! Dave Ramsey is an amazing communicator and is able to take each topic and make it both interesting and understandable. The discussions were helpful and the homework was hands on. I began to look forward to class each week.

I was completely amazed at how quickly my thinking had changed regarding financial matters. No longer was it a place of pain and contention, but it turned into a challenge. And best of all, it became teamwork! At long last, Bob and I are going in the same direction, sharing the same goals, and it truly feels like a miracle. This sense of oneness has spilled over into other areas of our marriage and we are facing similar challenges using some of Ramsey’s principles. (I still don’t like math, but with a little help from Excel and Dave Ramsey, I’m better equipped to face it.)

We are very excited to report that we became debt free only 4 months after completing the course! We recommend the course to anyone, no matter where you are financially. If you don’t have much money, it’s amazing to see that putting these principles into practice can help you to start over. If you already have a good start and you are wondering about how to invest, how to understand real estate, etc then you will gain an even more secure foothold.

Daniel and Carmelina Rakiec:

During pre-marital counseling, our pastor recommended the book “Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey.  We considered reading it, but didn’t get serious about it until he answered this question;

"Being where you are now, having gone through this yourself, what would you have wanted to know before you got married that you didn't learn until afterward?"

He said he really wished he had learned how to better handle money before he got married and he later learned how to handle money "God's ways" from Dave Ramsey.  He said he had made more progress in the last 12 months than in the previous 12 years.  We were waiting for him to say that if we referred him, he would get 50 bucks, or something like that, but he didn't!  So we gave the book a try.  It was encouraging and simple.  The goal is "Financial Peace," which happens when you can live without worrying about money because you know it is under control.

We started our marriage with around $88,000.00 in debt from a bunch of student loans and one car loan.  We also had some regular and small retail credit cards that we thought were okay to use as long as we paid off the balance every month.  We began to pay of those loans using the “debt snowball” Dave talks about.  We are currently credit card free, have only one loan left to pay off, and will be completely debt free 2 weeks  before FPU starts at BHCC.  All this in only 16 months!  It's starting to feel great not owing anyone anything.  We thought we were doing pretty good before, but now we are almost completely free and it’s awesome.

Next for us is investing, life insurance, buying a house, and saving for our (future) children's education.  FPU covers all these topics and we now have the understanding to make those decisions.

Dave Ramsey is a great teacher and has an anointed ministry helping people.  We can't wait to help facilitate FPU at BHCC and are excited to see more people get financial peace.
